Early prototypes of the Veracruz not only had to please the eye, they had to withstand test drives of over 100,000 miles, through some of the ugliest conditions on the planet. The vehicles were disassembled and parts were inspected under a microscope, looking for insights that could enhance quality or reliability. The result is a vehicle worthy of a 100,000-mile warranty. Minimal variations in body panel gaps are any car manufacturer’s true sign of build quality. Each Veracruz is scanned with lasers calibrated to detect variances of less than a millimeter. If gaps are too wide—thus causing excessive wind noise—or there are any other aberrations in body alignment, we’ll find and fix them.

The three-beam projector-style halogen headlights and detailed hoodline set the tone for the modern exterior. Wide-stance 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels (18-inch on Limited), convenient roof rack side rails and dual heated power side mirrors with turn signal indicators and approach lights finish off an exterior design that’s as stylish as it is functional.

Not even the windshield of the Veracruz has escaped the attention of our engineers. Made from solar control glass that repels UV radiation, it helps keep the interior cooler on brutal sun-baked days, and reduces the need for air conditioning.

A modern 4-spoke steering wheel, indulgent woodgrain interior accents, second-row climate control and an available LG® navigation system. Just a few of the amenities that make Veracruz one of the best-valued premium CUVs.

Step up to the Limited for 18” 5-spoke alloy wheels, a power tilt-and-slide glass sunroof, a convenient one-touch power tailgate, plush leather seating surfaces and heated front seats. The Infinity® audio system, complete with a 6-disc CD changer, subwoofer, and 8 Infinity speakers, will keep you tapping time on the power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, while dual front automatic temperature controls help maintain marital harmony.

When you choose the Limited with the available navigation system; you can also opt for the audiophile-quality 10-speaker Infinity® surround sound audio system. Each speaker has titanium-laminated drivers, which reduce distortion to nearly unmeasurable level, and, along with the LOGIC7™ surround sound circuitry, reproduce sound with faithful fidelity.

Mounted in the center console, the available LG® navigation system has a 6.5-inch touchscreen LCD, an integrated CD/DVD player that can play music while the navigation system is in use, and a full map of the U.S. with over 5 million points of interest.

Simple and intuitive are two often-overlooked measures of luxury. The Veracruz offers a single-touch Bluetooth® hands-free phone system, and straightforward iPod®/USB and auxiliary input jacks that allow you to plug in your iPod, hit play and go. Window switches, power locks, and mirror controls that are engineered to look, feel and sound purposeful. While many small details, from the placement of buttons and dials to the positioning of vents and handles, have been carefully considered and optimized, informed by the latest in ergonomic research.

Open the driver’s door; thanks to low door sills, expanded head room, and larger doors, getting in and out is easy. In fact the Veracruz has 150-plus cubic feet of total interior volume—more than the Mercedes GL—yet its total length is ten inches shorter. That tidier length helps give the Veracruz a smaller than normal turning diameter: a mere 36.7 feet. The convenience of this quickly becomes apparent when sighting a free parking spot on the other side of the street.

The eight-way power driver seat for the Limited model is wonderfully compliant and addictively comfortable. It can also connected to an intelligent Integrated Memory System that remembers precisely how you (and a second driver) like your mirrors, seat and steering wheel positioned. The Proximity Key senses when you approach and unlocks the doors when you touch a button on the door handle.

Power on demand is its own kind of luxury. The 3.8-liter, aluminum block V6 engine delivers 260 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque. The Continuously Variable Valve Timing perfectly synchronizes the intake and exhaust valves to widen the power band and boost fuel efficiency. Together with the 4 valves per cylinder, they provide smooth, effortless power.

The advanced 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® allows the driver to change gears on demand. Adaptive, it also adjusts to your particular driving habits. So when you accelerate rapidly, the transmission takes note and moves the shift points upward to maximize power and acceleration. It also includes preset shift patterns for specific conditions, such as uphill, inclement weather or performance driving.

The front suspension is an independent MacPherson strut design that employs coil springs, gas-charged shocks and a beefy 27-millimeter stabilizer bar. The rear suspension features an independent multi-link design. Coupled with a rigid unibody frame, road imperfections are absorbed with ease, and excessive rolling that can afflict lesser suspensions is nonexistent. Good handling is not the suspension’s only role. Along with the whisper-quiet cabin, it contributes to an all-encompassing feeling of luxury, confidence, and security, which may not appear on the window sticker, but is not at all that difficult to miss. The full-time All Wheel Drive (AWD) offers sensitive and accurate control in all driving conditions. While the engine-speed-sensing power steering provides more assistance at slower speeds or while parallel parking, and less at highway speeds.

The Veracruz continues Hyundai’s tradition of safety with a host of highly innovative passive and active safety features. This isn’t just a premium crossover vehicle, it’s a benchmark.

The Veracruz ABS is enhanced with Electronic Brake-force Distribution. Together, they seamlessly vary and adjust brake pressure to each wheel as necessary to provide maximum braking power during emergency maneuvers or under slippery road conditions. Brake Assist is another innovation that can sense a panic stop and automatically apply maximum braking power to shorten your stopping distance.

The Veracruz unibody starts with thousands of precise welds. The more welds, the stiffer the frame and the less chance of body roll. Combined with a wide track stance and advanced suspension, handling and stability are greatly enhanced. For straight protection, the high tensile steel unibody has also been carefully engineered with bodyside reinforcements, hood-buckling creases and crumple zones that shunt impact forces around the passenger cell.
