The first thing you’ll notice is the styling. Raked roofline, shark-fin antenna, sculpted grille—the Sonata has taken the lead in a new wave of Hyundai design called “Fluidic Sculpture”. The California influence is evident in its forward-thinking style, fusing beauty, performance and efficiency in one complete package.

The SE and Limited add a few touches to the already well-appointed GLS, like a chrome grille and door handles, front fog lights and chrome-tipped dual exhaust. The Limited takes it a step further with side-mirror turn signal indicators that increase visibility and safety.

Using opposing electrical charges, the advanced rotational dip paint process pulls primer and paint onto every inch and corner of the Sonata’s chassis and body, sealing them away from the elements and the effects of salt, rust and corrosion. The result is one of the highest quality paint jobs in the industry.

Heated side mirrors ward off frost, while solar control windows block UV rays to protect the interior, and you, from the wrath of the sun. The intentionally large windows increase visibility, reduce blind spots and contribute to a feeling of spaciousness and ride comfort for you and your passengers.

Don’t travel light—unless you really want to. The Sonata comes with a roomy 16.4 cubic feet of trunk space, thanks to a specially designed recessed hinge that tucks out of the way. And with no intrusive trunk hardware, you can pack without fear of damaging your luggage.

Keyless entry and ignition let you keep your keys in your pocket or purse. Power-adjustable front seats with power lumbar support give you eight ways to create a perfect fit. Dual temperature controls, heated front seats and even heated rear seats make sure that customized comfort for you and your passengers is a constant.

The Sonata has more interior volume and cargo space than the Toyota Camry. More head room, more leg room in front, and thanks to specially designed recessed hinges, even a larger trunk. In other words: plenty of room for five, plus luggage.

When you spend a lot of time behind the wheel, you tend to become an expert in seat comfort. So when Hyundai owners told our seat engineers — yes, we have engineers dedicated solely to seat design — that they weren’t getting quite enough leg support, we listened. We did a lot of calculations and experiments, created and tested a number of prototypes and, finally, brought them to consumers to try.

The Sonata’s navigation system makes it easy to get from A to B with voice recognition or through the interactive touchscreen. The XM NavTraffic® and XM Data Services allow you to search for nearby businesses like gas stations, ATMs or restaurants, get a clear picture of the current traffic situations, and check the weather, stocks and sports scores, all in real time.

No more fumbling for the key in your pocket or purse. The Sonata recognizes your key fob and with a push of a button on the door handle, automatically unlocks the door for you. Now you can get in, hit the push button start and go.

Whether you choose the 200-horsepower* 2.4L GDI engine or the 274-horsepower 2.0T twin-scroll turbo, you get the power you want, with the fuel efficiency you didn’t expect. Opposites really do attract.

Sonata engineers decided that instead of creating a 4-cylinder and a 6-cylinder option like the competition, that they would simply get more power out of a better, fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine. The result is two of the most revolutionary engines available. The Sonata’s 2.4L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine is the most powerful naturally aspirated 4-cylinder in its class. Delivering up to 200 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, the 2.4L gets a segment-leading 35 miles from every gallon of gas. This allows it to meet Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards, and in some states, a version even qualifies for Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) status. The Sonata 2.0T is a game-changer. This 4-cylinder twin-scroll turbo pumps out 274 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque—more than the V6 Camry, Accord and Altima. And at 33 MPG, blows them all away on fuel economy as well. Why spring for an expensive, less-economical V6 when you can get more power and better MPG with the 2.0T?

The manifold and turbine housing of the Sonata 2.0T twin-scroll turbo is one cast stainless steel piece. This highly advanced design helps minimize lag and is lighter than a conventional turbo engine. Specifically engineered to recover even more energy from the exhaust than a single-scroll turbocharger, the Sonata’s turbo improves combustion efficiency, and provides low-engine-speed efficiency.

Thanks to airbags galore, 4-wheel ABS brakes, front and rear crumple zones, and a whole host of modern safety technologies, the Sonata received a ‘Top Pick’ award from the IIHS. And with a name like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, you can bet they take their testing very seriously.

In 2012 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will require all vehicles to be equipped with ESC, a feature that Sonata and all Hyundai models have today. NHTSA studies show passenger cars equipped with ESC experience 35% fewer single-vehicle crashes, and 30% fewer single-vehicle fatalities. ESC sensors measure the difference between a driver’s intended path—when a turn is less or more than intended—and applies appropriate braking force to individual wheels to help regain control. ESC also includes Traction Control System (TCS), which reduces wheelspin when accelerating.
