The Equus engineers had the enviable task of setting a new design standard for an entire line of vehicles. Starting with the distinctive front grille, deliberate lines continue from the hood through the body to show off the staggered-width 19-inch chrome wheels. LED turn signals with HID Xenon headlights, sculpted front fog lights, and the distinctive air intake further set the Equus apart in a field of conventional rivals.

Equus has been engineered for performance from the ground up. 19-inch chrome alloy wheels with staggered-width performance tires (P245/45R19 in front and P275/40R19 in the rear) not only give the Equus a formidable look, but ensure superior handling.

Equus offers a forward-view cornering camera. From its vantage point at the top of the grille, the camera provides an extra margin of safety for negotiating tight alleys and parking spaces. The wide-angle image is displayed on the central in-dash navigation screen at low parking speeds, then switches back to the navigation mode at higher driving speeds.

Stylish LED turn signal indicators frame the front Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights. The Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS) turns with the vehicle’s steering angle so that upcoming curves and intersections receive maximum illumination. The sophisticated auto-leveling headlights also keep light parallel to the road surface regardless of vehicle load.

Equus has full-body integrated chrome accents to highlight the exterior. A strong horizontal grille and 19-inch chrome alloy wheels set the tone, while chrome insert moldings on the bumpers and door handles complement the exterior design. A chrome lower bodyside accent and fascia-integrated dual asymmetrical chrome exhaust tips finish off this exceptional look.

Leather everything. Alcantara® suede headliner. Premium wood trim. Power rear side-window sunshades. Harman navigation system. 608-watt Lexicon® 7.1 Discrete Surround Sound Audio System. And a 12-way adjustable driver seat that is heated/cooled and even offers massage. The Equus, a new kind of luxury.

The 12-way adjustable driver seat is heated, cooled, and has a massage—something you won’t find on the Lexus LS 460. Seat height, rake, seatback recline, and seat cushion adjustments are easily controlled from the upper door panel that memorizes the preferences of multiple drivers. Equus also employs a unique thermoelectric technology that controls the heating, cooling and humidity of the seat surface for optimal comfort, while most competitors (the few that offer it) simply have their systems connected to their less efficient standard air conditioning systems.

The 8-inch VGA display screen is the Driver Information System (DIS) and navigation interface. The large, easy-to-read screen is intuitive for primary driving functions, quick data recognition and driver control. Navigation is a snap with full map functions and a simple, comprehensive interface thanks to XM NavTraffic®.

PGS uses the rearview camera, and a simple, superimposed graphic with parking guidelines to help direct drivers into even the tightest parking spots. Front and rear parking sensors offer an extra line of protection in case you get too close to another car or object.

Instead of three rear seats, Equus Ultimate comes with two roomy, premium seats. Heated and cooled with power adjustable head restraints, there’s also an electronically cooled center console refrigerator and an independently controlled entertainment system. The 50/50 split allows the passenger in the first-class seat (rear right) to extend the leg support, recline and enjoy a back massage.

Starting with 17 speakers standard (more than BMW and Mercedes-Benz), the Lexicon® 7.1 Discrete Surround Sound Audio System includes a 13-channel digital amplifier that produces 608 watts of distortion-free music. It also has XM® Satellite Radio with over 170 digital channels, HD Radio™ technology, and iPod®/USB and auxiliary input jacks.

Cutting out the sun or prying eyes has never been so easy and stylish. Ventilated rear side-window sunshades operate smoothly and quietly at the touch of a button.

The engine is an award-winning 385-horsepower V8. The advanced 6-speed automatic transmission was produced by ZF®, arguably the best transmission maker in the world. And a well-balanced, rear-wheel-drive layout gives Equus the foundation to perform less like a traditional luxury car and more like a high-performance sports sedan.

The Tau® 4.6L V8 won a Ward’s 10 Best Engines award in both 2009 and 2010. No other V8 competitor can claim that—not Lexus, not Mercedes. The high-pressure die-cast engine block is entirely aluminum. A Variable Induction System (VIS) improves both low-end torque and high-end horsepower, while Dual Continuous Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) maximizes power. Further details like the timing chain drive system, serpentine belt and iridium double-tipped spark plugs help make Equus one of the most fuel-efficient luxury cars in its class.

Hyundai engineers partnered with famous German transmission maker ZF to choose a high-performance transmission specifically for Equus. Precise gear ratios and lightweight components make the ZF 6-speed highly responsive and a perfect complement to the Tau® 385 hp V8. Whether in automatic or SHIFTRONIC® manual shift mode, it also has the capability to achieve torque converter lock-up in top gear which dramatically closes the fuel-efficiency gap between automatic and manual transmissions.

The very nature of rear-wheel drive shifts the Equus closer to a more ideal 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. This means the engine, transmission, driveshaft and rear differential provide better dynamic balance. The larger rear tires and springs take on their fair share of the workload, offering a smoother, more stable ride, with greater maximum stopping power and enhanced handling and traction under hard acceleration.

Much more sophisticated than typical shocks, Continuous Damping Control (CDC) is an electronic damping system that noticeably increases ride comfort and overall driving dynamics at the same time. Sensors monitor values for body, wheel, and lateral acceleration, then use them to generate the ideal damping forces for each wheel on a continuous basis. This minimizes body roll and makes acceleration and deceleration stable, steady and smooth. Like a more high-performance feel? Select Sport mode with sport-level damping for a firm, more responsive ride.

Hyundai has always been committed to safety. Equus steps up this tradition with nine airbags, reinforced unibody construction, and an entire Vehicle Stability Management System tasked with making sure all active and passive safety features work optimally.

An ultra-high-strength steel unibody with energy-dispersing crumple zones forms the core of the Equus passive safety system. The reinforced steel frame enhances safety and handling by creating a more rigid and lightweight body structure. Crash-durable adhesives in critical areas increase dynamic torsional rigidity, enabling better ride, handling and increased safety.

Smart Cruise Control detects vehicles within a driver-specified distance, and automatically maintains a consistent following distance. Operating like your normal cruise control when no other vehicles are near, radar judges the distance and speed of vehicles in front of you, and accelerates or brakes to help maintain a driver-selectable distance.

In 2012 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will require all vehicles to be equipped with ESC, a feature that Equus and all Hyundai models have today. NHTSA studies show passenger cars equipped with ESC experience 35% fewer single-vehicle crashes, and 30% fewer single-vehicle fatalities. ESC sensors measure the difference between a driver’s intended path—when a turn is less or more than intended—and applies appropriate braking force to individual wheels to help regain control. ESC also includes Traction Control System (TCS), which reduces wheelspin when accelerating.
